Fashion in Motion

I had wanted to photograph in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II for a long time. It is one of those places where so much happens at once that the energy is almost impossible to ignore. The architecture is grand, the space is busy, and the constant flow of visitors gives the location its own rhythm. In a setting like this, I was not looking for perfect stillness. I was looking for images that could hold on to the mood of the place: fashion, elegance, movement, and the speed that Milano carries so naturally.

With Chiara, the working process felt easy from the beginning. We already knew each other, so there was no need for much explanation before we started. A short conversation about the situation, a few shared ideas, and then we were ready to work in the middle of all that activity. That lightness matters to me. When the space is so full and the environment so present, the connection between photographer and model needs to stay clear and simple. It allows the images to feel direct rather than staged.

The series is shaped by contrast: the strong presence of the location against the calm concentration of the portrait. The black-and-white language adds a sense of reduction, which helps keep the images focused on gesture, posture, and expression. Even with the movement around us, the photographs stay close to the subject. There is a balance between the public character of the place and the more private moment created inside it.

In Milano, fashion is not a detail — it is part of the rhythm of the city.

Not every frame has to be technically perfect for the series to work. In this case, the atmosphere mattered more to me than absolute sharpness. The images carry the feeling of being made in the moment, with the energy of Milano still visible in the background. That is what I wanted: not a clean fashion fantasy removed from reality, but a portrait series that belongs to the city and reflects what it gives off. In that sense, the setting is not just a backdrop. It becomes part of the way the images speak.

What stays with me is the combination of elegance and speed. The Galleria brings both into the same frame, and the photographs follow that rhythm. They are shaped by a place where style is always present, where movement never really stops, and where fashion feels like part of daily life rather than a separate world. For me, that is exactly what makes the series work.
