Chasing Daylight

In this photo series with Naïla van Kommer, I wanted to capture the essence of portraiture through a blend of natural light and mood-driven composition. The photos were shot in my studio, where the light flowing in through the large windows created a soft, almost ethereal ambiance that is reflected in the delicate yet bold portrayal of Naila. The interplay between the light and shadows highlighted her features in a way that feels intimate and timeless. This combination of light and her natural presence contributed to the emotional depth of the series, where each image tells a subtle yet powerful story.

Throughout our session, Naila’s professional attitude stood out. She brought an incredible energy to the shoot, making it easy to create a space where she could express herself freely, which is essential when capturing portraits that feel genuine. Her movements were fluid, and the way she interacted with the light added a unique intensity to the photographs. This collaboration was a perfect example of how the energy between the photographer and model can elevate the emotional resonance of the final images.

The overall mood of the series is contemplative and introspective, drawing viewers into Naïla van Kommer’s world. The use of hard, directional daylight gives the images a natural, almost documentary-style quality while still maintaining the stark contrasts that black-and-white photography brings. Each shot feels like a moment frozen in time, where light and emotion come together to convey a powerful, silent narrative.
