In these images, I searched for the kind of quiet melancholy that reveals itself only when everything else falls silent.
The series, created during one of my portrait workshops in my Zurich studio, carries an atmosphere that is felt more than seen. Together with Halyna, a collection emerged in which the light does more than sculpt—it listens. The restrained studio setting, framed by dark fabric backdrops, becomes a place where emotion is not defined but inhaled.
“The light listened while the shadows shaped their answers.”
Across the images, there is a subtle aftertaste—a soft echo of contemplation reflected in Halyna’s gaze and in the delicate tension of her gestures. Nothing is loud, nothing demands attention; instead, a quiet melancholy unfolds, one that resembles an inner pause more than sadness. The monochrome visual language gives these nuances space, turning every detail into a whispered note.
Her shifting posture—a slight tilt of the head, a resting arm, a hand suspended as if mid-thought—reveals emotional nuances that resist naming. It’s a form of vulnerability not born from exposure, but from presence. A gentle invitation to the viewer to linger on their own terms.
As the series unfolds, a restrained conversation emerges between her and the light. Shadows flow around her softly, as though they were lifting weight away rather than adding to it, leaving only what matters: a moment of inner gathering. The collection becomes a visual journey that does not document but remembers—an emotional echo that reveals itself slowly.
In the end, a photographic space remains where melancholy is not a state but a tone—one that lends depth without darkening. A series of portraits that finds its power in leading us, gently, back into ourselves.
