In the hush of the studio, her presence carved a path through the darkness.
There is something magnetic about the moment when a gaze meets the lens and refuses to soften. When Carla — traveling from Poland through Switzerland in 2023 — stepped into the studio, that magnetism became unmistakable. The shadows wrapped around her like a whispered dare, inviting me to shape the space between light and intent. What emerged was less a portrait than a distilled emotion.
Working in black and white strips everything down to its essence, revealing the quiet truth beneath the surface. Carla’s expression carried a sculpted intensity, sharpened by the way the light grazed her cheekbones and settled into the curve of her shoulders. Each subtle tilt of her body redefined the atmosphere, turning contrast into conversation. I followed those shifts as though listening to a private rhythm only she could conduct.
I was drawn to the interplay between softness and structure — the delicate embroidery tracing her form against the stark simplicity of the backdrop. It reminded me how photographs can hold contradictions gracefully, allowing strength and sensuality to coexist without explanation. In the frame, Carla became both silk and steel, effortlessly merging presence with poise.
“Working in black and white strips everything down to its essence.”
As the session unfolded, the darkness surrounding her became less of a void and more of a canvas, absorbing and releasing nuance with every shift of the light. I found myself reaching for the quiet moments between poses, the ones where her confidence settled into something unguarded. These are the fragments that remind me why I chase shadows — because within them, truth gathers shape.
What lingers for me now is the sensation of suspended time, of a presence so self-assured it needed no embellishment. Working with Carla during her journey through Switzerland felt like capturing a fleeting chapter of her travels — one illuminated not by place, but by the energy she carried with her. In the end, it wasn’t the pose I remembered, but the pulse beneath it.
